EVD-020 Ordering: Ventricular and Lumbar Catheter Options

How to order the EVD-020 with a ventricular or lumbar catheter: the four configuration codes, what each set contains, and the look-alike codes to watch for.

The DESU EVD-020 Series is ordered under four codes: ENDS-C-020 (standard ventricular catheter), ENDS-AC-020 (antibiotic-impregnated ventricular catheter), LCK-ENDS-020 (standard lumbar catheter) and LACK-ENDS-020 (antibiotic-impregnated lumbar catheter). All four share one drainage system, so the order comes down to two choices: drainage route and catheter version.

Key takeaways

  • The EVD-020 Series has four catheter configurations, each with its own code.
  • All four share the same drainage system; only the route and the catheter version change.
  • Ventricular sets include a stylet, while lumbar sets include a 14 G Tuohy needle and a guidewire.
  • Look-alike codes such as LCK and LCK-ENDS-020 are different products, so write the full code.

Anyone turning a clinical decision into an order line for EVD sets needs two things: what each EVD-020 Series configuration contains, and where similar codes cause mistakes. The choice between ventricular and lumbar drainage belongs to the treating team, and use of the system follows the instructions for use. For the case for running both routes on one system, see EVD-020 with a lumbar catheter. For specifying catheters across both EVD series, see antibiotic-impregnated catheters in EVD sets.

What is the same in every EVD-020 configuration?

The drainage system does not change with the catheter. Each configuration includes:

  • A 60 cm reinforced connection line with a locking mechanism.
  • A 30 cm graduated measuring scale, with pressure readings in mmHg and cmH₂O.
  • A 150 ml drip chamber.
  • An 800 ml air-filtered drainage bag.
  • Two three-way connectors.
  • A hydrophobic filter.

What are the four EVD-020 configurations?

CodeRouteCatheter versionDescription
ENDS-C-020VentricularStandardAdvanced external ventricular drainage system with standard ventricular catheter
ENDS-AC-020VentricularAntibiotic-impregnatedAdvanced external ventricular drainage system with antibiotic-impregnated ventricular catheter
LCK-ENDS-020LumbarStandardAdvanced external drainage system with standard lumbar catheter
LACK-ENDS-020LumbarAntibiotic-impregnatedAdvanced external drainage system with antibiotic-impregnated lumbar catheter

In the antibiotic-impregnated versions, the antibiotic is impregnated into the catheter material and released in a controlled manner over 28 days. Those catheters are orange; standard ones are white.

What comes with a ventricular configuration?

ENDS-C-020 combines the drainage system with a standard ventricular catheter of 1.5 mm inner diameter, 3.0 mm outer diameter and 31 cm length. ENDS-AC-020 uses an antibiotic-impregnated external ventricular drainage catheter instead. Both include the same application components:

  • Stylet.
  • Fixation tab.
  • Luer Lock connector and distal cap.
  • Angled trocar.

What comes with a lumbar configuration?

LCK-ENDS-020 combines the drainage system with a standard lumbar catheter of 0.8 mm inner diameter, 1.6 mm outer diameter and 100 cm length. LACK-ENDS-020 uses an antibiotic-impregnated external lumbar drainage catheter instead. Both are supplied with:

  • Fixation tab.
  • Luer Lock connector.
  • Angled trocar.
  • 14 G Tuohy needle.
  • Guidewire.

Which similar codes get mixed up?

  • Series number: the last three digits separate the EVD-020 from the EVD-010. ENDS-C-010, ENDS-AC-010, LCK-ENDS-010 and LACK-ENDS-010 belong to the EVD-010 Series.
  • One letter: C and AC, or LCK and LACK, are the only difference between a standard and an impregnated set.
  • Shortened codes: LCK on its own is the lumbar catheter kit and LACK its impregnated version. Neither is an EVD-020 set, so never shorten LCK-ENDS-020.
  • ENDS-020 on its own: this is the EVD-020 drainage system, supplied as a compatible accessory, and not one of the four catheter configurations.

The two series have the same drainage components and the same standard ventricular catheter dimensions, so the last three digits are easy to overlook. ENDS-HL and ENDS-LASER are also EVD-020 compatible accessories, and our product specialists can advise on them before they go on an order.

Does a lumbar set also need the lumbar drainage catheter kit?

No. LCK-ENDS-020 and LACK-ENDS-020 already include a lumbar catheter and its application components.

The lumbar drainage catheter kit is a separate product, coded ELCK and ELACK-1608800, with an 80 cm catheter, compared with the 100 cm catheter in the EVD-020 lumbar set. The diameters are the same. If your protocol names a catheter length, check which product it refers to and state it on the order, so that nothing is duplicated or substituted.

How should the order line be written?

Write one line per configuration, with the code, the description and the quantity, in the order of the two decisions: route first, then catheter version. Avoid free-text lines such as “EVD set, catheter as required”, which leave both decisions to whoever picks the order. A department using both routes and both catheter versions would have four lines, with quantities taken from its own protocol and usage:

LineCodeWritten description
1ENDS-C-020EVD-020, ventricular, standard catheter
2ENDS-AC-020EVD-020, ventricular, antibiotic-impregnated catheter
3LCK-ENDS-020EVD-020, lumbar, standard catheter
4LACK-ENDS-020EVD-020, lumbar, antibiotic-impregnated catheter

A department that uses one route or one catheter version simply drops the lines it does not need. Keeping the description beside the code means a typing error shows up as a mismatch before the order is sent.

On receipt, check the code on the label against the line, and the catheter colour against the version ordered: orange for ENDS-AC-020 and LACK-ENDS-020, white for the other two.

Frequently asked questions

If we use both drainage routes, do we need separate stock items?

Yes, in the sense that each catheter configuration has its own code. The drainage components are shared, but a ventricular set and a lumbar set are ordered as different products.

Does choosing the impregnated catheter change the drainage system?

No. The option concerns the catheter only. The line, scale, drip chamber, bag, three-way connectors and filter are the same across the EVD-020 Series.

Can an order line say EVD-020 without a code?

It is best not to. “EVD-020” names a series with four configurations, so it leaves the route and catheter version open. The full code removes both questions.
