EVD Connection Line: The Reinforced Line and Its Lock
DESU EVD sets use a 60 cm reinforced connection line with a locking mechanism. What it connects, why connections matter and what to check and specify.
In DESU EVD-010 and EVD-020 systems, the reinforced connection line is a 60 cm line with a locking mechanism that provides the connection between the drainage system components. How the lock is operated is set out in the instructions for use (IFU).
Key takeaways
- EVD-010 and EVD-020 both have a 60 cm reinforced connection line with a locking mechanism.
- The line provides the connection between the drainage system components, and the lock supports that connection.
- The locking mechanism is separate from the Luer Lock connector, and it is not a flow control.
- The instructions for use set out how the line and its lock are handled.
The line is part of every system in the DESU range of EVD sets, including the EVD-010 Series and EVD-020 Series. For the whole set, see the EVD set components checklist.
What are the line’s specifications?
- Length: 60 cm.
- Construction: reinforced.
- Locking mechanism: yes.
- Function: it provides the connection between the drainage system components, and the lock supports the system connection.
- Availability: the same specification on EVD-010 and EVD-020.
Where does the line sit in an EVD set?
An external drainage system takes cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the patient and collects it outside the body, at a level set against a scale. The DESU drainage system has these components alongside the line:
- A 30 cm measuring scale with mmHg and cmH₂O markings.
- A 150 ml drip chamber.
- An 800 ml air-filtered drainage bag.
- Two three-way connectors.
- A hydrophobic filter.
On the catheter side, the Luer Lock connector forms the link between the catheter and the drainage system, and is supplied with a distal cap. The line is what ties the system’s components together.
Why do connections matter in external drainage?
An EVD is a closed system that often stays in place while the patient is turned, examined and moved. Every joint in that system is a point that staff have to keep an eye on, because a joint that comes apart opens the system and interrupts drainage.
Line patency matters too. Tubing that is kinked or compressed can restrict flow, and reinforcement is commonly used in medical lines with that concern in mind.
What does the locking mechanism do, and what does it not do?
The mechanism supports the system connection. Three distinctions are useful:
- It is not the Luer Lock connector. The two are separate parts, and the Luer Lock connector forms the link between the catheter and the drainage system.
- It is not a flow control. Directing or stopping flow belongs to other parts of the system, such as the three-way connectors. See EVD clamp and stopcock handling.
- It does not replace checking. A locked connection still needs to be inspected as the IFU and the unit’s protocol require.
How do EVD-010 and EVD-020 differ here?
They do not. The two systems differ in the catheter. EVD-010 has a 31 cm ventricular catheter, while EVD-020 is used with a ventricular or a lumbar catheter. The connection line specification is the same on both, which keeps things simple for staff who use both systems. Antibiotic impregnation is a catheter option, so it leaves the line specification unchanged.
What should nurses look at on the line?
The IFU sets the procedure. Units can adapt this checklist to their own protocol:
- The line is intact, with no visible damage or kinks.
- The locking mechanism is engaged as the IFU describes.
- Connections are still secure after the patient is turned, moved or transported.
- The line runs clear of bed rails and anything else that could pull on it or compress it.
What should a buyer put in a specification?
A short line is enough: “Reinforced connection line, 60 cm, with locking mechanism.” For a deeper technical review, our product specialists can answer questions on the line’s construction or on ordering it separately from the set.

Frequently asked questions
Is the line the same when EVD-020 is used with a lumbar catheter?
Yes. EVD-020 has one drainage system, with the ventricular or lumbar catheter as options, and the 60 cm reinforced line with its locking mechanism is part of that system.
Is a longer line available?
The line is 60 cm on both systems. If your unit has a specific layout requirement, tell our product specialists.
Does the locking mechanism close off the drain during transport?
No. It supports the system connection and is not a way of stopping flow. Clamping and transport follow the IFU and your hospital’s protocol.
