EVD Set Specification Sheet for Tenders: What to Include

Build an EVD set specification sheet for your tender: catheter, measuring scale, drip chamber, bag, filter and options, shown with EVD-010 and EVD-020 values.

An EVD set specification sheet should list, line by line, the catheter, drainage line, measuring scale, drip chamber, drainage bag, connectors, filter, placement accessories and catheter options, each with a value a bidder can confirm. DESU’s EVD-010 and EVD-020 sets show the level of detail: a 30 cm scale, 150 ml chamber and 800 ml bag, for example.

Key takeaways

  • Split the sheet into catheter, drainage system, placement accessories, options and documents.
  • EVD-010 and EVD-020 share the same drainage values: 60 cm line, 30 cm scale, 150 ml chamber, 800 ml bag.
  • State whether the set uses a ventricular or lumbar catheter, and standard or antibiotic-impregnated.
  • Sterilisation method, shelf life and storage conditions come from the labelling and instructions for use.

The sheet below is for hospital buyers and ICU or theatre leads who need a technical annex for a tender, with DESU EVD sets as worked values. EVD set components for nurses and buyers explains what each part does, and EVD tender and RFP responses covers the documents a manufacturer provides.

How should the specification sheet be organised?

Five blocks are enough, and each should fit on one page:

  • Catheter: type, diameters, length, standard or antibiotic-impregnated.
  • Drainage system: line, scale, chamber, bag, connectors, filter.
  • Placement accessories: everything needed to place and secure the catheter.
  • Options and order lines: what the hospital will actually buy.
  • Regulatory and documents: what must accompany the offer.

Keep one requirement per row. A row that asks for a chamber, a bag and a filter at once cannot be scored cleanly.

What should the drainage system block say?

This is the most consistent part of the sheet. The EVD-010 Series and the EVD-020 Series share the same values for the core drainage components.

Drip chamber150 ml150 ml
Drainage bag800 ml, air-filtered800 ml, air-filtered

When you adapt this table, decide which values are hard requirements and which are preferences. Both pressure units on the scale may be essential if your unit charts in one and your doctors think in the other. A chamber or bag capacity may be better written as a minimum, which keeps comparable products in the competition.

What should the catheter block say?

State the catheter type first, since external drainage may be ventricular or lumbar.

  • EVD-010 with ventricular catheter: 1.5 mm inner diameter, 3.0 mm outer diameter, 31 cm length, in standard or antibiotic-impregnated form.
  • Separately coded EVD catheters: DESU also supplies 1.5 / 3.0 mm at 35 cm and 1.9 / 3.4 mm at 35 cm, both as antibiotic-impregnated catheters, if your surgeons need a different size.
  • EVD-020: used with a ventricular or lumbar catheter. Ask for the catheter dimensions of the exact configuration in the offer.
  • Lumbar option: the lumbar drainage catheter kit has 0.8 mm inner and 1.6 mm outer diameter at 80 cm, with tantalum length marks from 5–20 cm.

If your protocol uses length marks on the EVD catheter, write that as its own row and ask bidders to state the marked range for the configuration they are offering. Do the same for radiopacity. Both are easy to verify on a sample.

For the antibiotic-impregnated version, keep the wording plain: the antibiotic is impregnated into the catheter material and released in a controlled manner over 28 days. Treat this as a separate order line, because it has its own code.

Which placement accessories should be listed?

Accessories are easy to overlook, and a missing item only shows up at the bedside. List each one as a row:

  • EVD-010: stylet, fixation tab, Luer Lock connector and distal cap, angled trocar.
  • EVD-020: stylet, angled trocar, Luer Lock connector and distal cap, fixation tab.
  • EVD-020 lumbar configurations: Tuohy needle and guidewire as well.

Ask your bedside and theatre staff to read this block before it goes out. They will know whether your unit also needs items that are not part of the set, and those should be bought on their own lines and not assumed.

How should the order lines be written?

A tender is scored on what you intend to buy, so match the sheet to real order lines. DESU codes make that structure visible:

ConfigurationEVD-010 codeEVD-020 code
Standard ventricular catheterENDS-C-010ENDS-C-020
Antibiotic-impregnated ventricular catheterENDS-AC-010ENDS-AC-020
Standard lumbar catheterLCK-ENDS-010LCK-ENDS-020
Antibiotic-impregnated lumbar catheterLACK-ENDS-010LACK-ENDS-020

Do not forget the replacement line. A unit changes bags more often than sets, so price the bag separately if your practice calls for it. The 800 ml air-filtered drainage bag can be supplied on its own, sterile and single-use, in packs of 1, 5 or 10 (ENDS-B1, ENDS-B5, ENDS-B10). Asking for a price per bag across pack sizes keeps the comparison fair.

What belongs in the regulatory and documents block?

Ask for proof, not statements. DESU EVD sets are CE marked and made under ISO 13485; ask every bidder for the same. Our tender documents guide lists the full pack.

Some rows belong here and not in the technical block, because they come from the labelling and the instructions for use: sterilisation method, shelf life, storage conditions and carton quantity. Ask each bidder to state them for the exact product offered.

How should bidders answer the sheet?

Add three columns to every row: value offered, compliant yes or no, and the document and page that proves it. Then state how you will treat a non-compliant row. Mark each one as mandatory or scored so that a bidder who misses a preference is not treated like one who misses a must-have.

Finally, ask for a sample of the complete set. A value on paper shows that a chamber is 150 ml. It does not show whether your nurses can read the scale easily at the bedside, and that is worth checking before you award.

Frequently asked questions

Should EVD-010 and EVD-020 be tendered together?

If you use both, list them as separate lines with their own codes. Their drainage values match, so what you score is the configuration and accessories each line includes.

Can the same sheet cover lumbar drainage?

Yes, if the catheter block has its own lumbar rows. Both series have lumbar configurations. Add the Tuohy needle and guidewire as requirements for those lines.

Is a pressure transducer part of the specification?

Only if your unit needs one and your supplier lists it. Write any item outside the set as its own line, and ask bidders to confirm compatibility with their set.

Should the sheet set a price per set or per episode?

Price per order line is the cleanest way to compare offers. Use your own usage figures to work out the cost per patient, including replacement bags, after the offers are in.
