Desu External Lumbar Drainage System

With Antibiotic Impregnated Lumbar Catheter Advanced CSF Management for Infection-Controlled Neurosurgical Procedures

The External Lumbar Drainage System developed by Desu is a precision-engineered, sterile solution for the temporary diversion and controlled management of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via the lumbar spine. Designed for clinical environments such as neurosurgical operating rooms, neurological ICUs, and emergency neurology units, this system ensures patient safety, procedural efficiency, and effective CSF regulation.

With the inclusion of a 31 cm antibiotic-impregnated lumbar catheter, supported by an advanced external drainage system, Desu provides a comprehensive toolset for managing elevated intracranial pressure, CSF leaks, or infections related to neurosurgical complications.

System Overview

The Desu External Lumbar Drainage System is supplied as a complete, ready-to-use set. It includes both the catheterization components and the external collection system, eliminating the need for additional assembly or component sourcing.

Antibiotic Impregnated Lumbar Catheter

At the heart of this system is the antibiotic-impregnated lumbar catheter, a 31 cm device specifically designed to minimize the risk of postoperative infection while maintaining the performance required for safe lumbar CSF access.

Key specifications:

Inner Diameter (ID): 0.8 mm

Outer Diameter (OD): 1.6 mm

Length: 31 cm

Material: Barium-impregnated silicone

Drainage Ports: 6 drainage holes, arranged in 4 rows at the proximal end

Radiopacity: High, supported by barium and tantalum marking

The catheter is impregnated with:

Clindamycin Hydrochloride

Rifampicin

These antibiotics are embedded into the catheter wall and released over 28 days, covering the critical postoperative period. This continuous, localized antibiotic delivery greatly reduces the colonization risk of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and other common pathogens.

Catheterization Kit Components

The catheterization part of the kit includes the following sterile accessories:

1. Fixation Tab

Ensures external stabilization of the catheter to prevent migration or unintentional removal. It is placed securely at the skin surface to maintain the catheter’s insertion depth and angle.

2. Luer Lock Connector and Distal Cap

Provides a secure and leak-free interface between the catheter and external drainage lines. The Luer lock mechanism allows easy integration into standard CSF collection systems while maintaining a closed system to reduce infection risk.

3. Angled Trocar

Included for cases requiring precise, controlled access to the subarachnoid space. The angled design allows smooth entry, particularly useful in patients with anatomical constraints.

4. 14G Tuohy Needle

A curved-tip spinal access needle widely used in lumbar puncture techniques. It provides the initial access point for catheter insertion with minimal trauma to surrounding tissues.

5. Guidewire

Facilitates the smooth advancement of the catheter during insertion. Its flexible design enhances maneuverability while maintaining directional control, helping avoid complications during placement.

External Drainage System Components

Desu’s system goes beyond standard catheterization by offering a complete CSF drainage circuit, designed for safe fluid collection and pressure regulation:

1. 60 cm Reinforced Cord with Locking Mechanism

Used to suspend the drainage chamber at a fixed height, allowing gravitational drainage and accurate fluid flow control.

2. 30 cm Vertical Measuring Scale

Attached to the system for precise adjustment of CSF pressure. Measurements are clearly marked in both mmHg and cmH₂O, providing clinicians with real-time data and control over intracranial pressure levels.

3. 150 ml Drip Chamber

Collects and displays the initial volume of CSF. Its transparent construction allows for visual inspection of fluid clarity, color, and rate of flow.

4. 800 ml Drainage Bag with Integrated Air Filter

Stores the CSF for analysis or disposal. The air filter ensures sterile conditions within the drainage system and prevents backflow contamination.

5. Three-Way Connectors (x2)

Allows the integration of multiple drainage lines or access points for fluid sampling, administration of intrathecal medications, or circuit flushing.

6. Hydrophobic Filter

Prevents airborne pathogens and moisture from entering the sterile CSF collection pathway. This filter maintains the integrity of the closed system and ensures that no external moisture compromises the sample or line sterility.

Clinical Applications

The Desu External Lumbar Drainage System is suited for a wide range of neurosurgical and neurological conditions, including:

Traumatic brain injury with increased intracranial pressure

Postoperative CSF leakage following spinal or cranial surgery

Subarachnoid hemorrhage requiring pressure reduction

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)

Pseudotumor cerebri / Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH)

Ventriculitis management

Diagnostic CSF sampling when prolonged drainage is required

Its closed, sterile, and pressure-regulated design allows the drainage of CSF while reducing the risk of overdrainage, infection, and pressure fluctuations.

Infection Prevention

A central feature of this system is its infection control strategy. The antibiotic-impregnated catheter, hydrophobic filter, and airtight sealed drainage path work together to create a robust defense against pathogens. This is especially critical in prolonged drainage scenarios or in immunocompromised patients where infection risks are elevated.

The 28-day controlled release of antibiotics addresses bacterial colonization without requiring systemic antibiotics, providing a focused, localized prophylactic effect.

Sterilization and Packaging

All components are individually sterile-packed and suitable for direct use. The complete set is sterilized via ethylene oxide (EtO) and meets international standards for neurosurgical implants and external drainage devices.
