EVD Drainage Bag: The 800 ml Air-Filtered Bag Explained

The DESU 800 ml air-filtered EVD drainage bag: what the air filter is for, how it differs from the hydrophobic filter, and pack codes ENDS-B1, B5 and B10.

The 800 ml air-filtered drainage bag is the collection end of a DESU external drainage system. It is part of the EVD-010 and EVD-020 EVD sets, has an integrated air filter, and is sterile and single-use. It can also be ordered separately, as ENDS-B1, ENDS-B5 or ENDS-B10, in packs of 1, 5 or 10.

Key takeaways

  • The 800 ml air-filtered bag is the collection point of DESU EVD-010 and EVD-020 systems.
  • It has an integrated air filter and a clear, durable construction for monitoring the fluid level.
  • It is sterile and single-use, and can be ordered separately as ENDS-B1, ENDS-B5 or ENDS-B10.
  • The bag’s air filter and the system’s hydrophobic filter are separate items.

Change-out frequency and fill limits are a matter of hospital protocol, covered in EVD Drainage Bag Sizing and Change-Out.

Where does the bag sit in an EVD set?

CSF leaves the catheter, travels along the 60 cm reinforced connection line, and reaches the 150 ml drip chamber. The drip chamber supports visual monitoring of drainage flow and the transfer of fluid into the drainage bag. The bag is the last stage: it collects what the chamber passes on.

The same bag appears in both systems. The EVD-010 Series and the EVD-020 Series both include an 800 ml air-filtered bag, so a hospital that uses both needs to stock only one replacement item. For the rest of the set, see EVD Set Components.

What are the bag’s main features?

  • 800 ml fluid capacity.
  • An integrated air filter.
  • Clear, durable construction for easy fluid-level monitoring.
  • Compatibility with all external drainage systems.
  • Sterile, single-use supply.

Why does a drainage bag have an air filter?

A collection bag is a closed container, and fluid running into it has to displace something. In a sealed bag with no vent, the air already inside has nowhere to go. A filtered vent gives that air a way out, so the bag can fill, without leaving an open path between the bag’s interior and the room.

The DESU filter is integrated into the bag. If a tender needs a filter rating, our product specialists can advise on documentation.

How is this different from the hydrophobic filter?

Buyers sometimes read “air filter” and “hydrophobic filter” as the same thing. They are separate items: the air filter belongs to the drainage bag, while the hydrophobic filter is one of the core components of the drainage system. EVD-020 specifications give them separate rows.

When writing a specification, list both. A line that says only “filter” does not tell a supplier which one is meant, and it hides the fact that a replacement bag brings its own air filter with it.

What does 800 ml mean in practice?

It is the bag’s fluid capacity. It is not a fill target, and it does not tell a unit when to change the bag; that is set by the hospital’s protocol and the instructions for use.

The clear construction lets staff see the fluid level at the bedside. Monitoring of drainage flow is the job of the drip chamber. If a unit’s documentation depends on readings taken from the bag itself, check a sample against that practice before standardising.

How is the bag ordered separately?

Order codeContents
ENDS-B1800 ml air-filtered drainage bag, 1 piece
ENDS-B5800 ml air-filtered drainage bag, 5 pieces
ENDS-B10800 ml air-filtered drainage bag, 10 pieces

The right mix depends on each unit’s drain numbers and change-out protocol. Because every bag is single-use, the count that matters is how many bag changes a unit expects, not how many patients it treats.

Does the same bag work for lumbar drainage?

Yes. EVD-020 is offered with ventricular and lumbar catheters on the same drainage system, and that system includes the 800 ml air-filtered bag. The drainage side therefore stays the same when the route changes, including for lumbar set-ups using the lumbar drainage catheter kit.

The bag is compatible with all external drainage systems. If you plan to use it with a system from another manufacturer, check the connection against that system’s instructions and with our product specialists before relying on it.

What should go in a specification or stock plan?

  • Capacity: 800 ml, written out.
  • Air filter: integrated, named separately from the hydrophobic filter.
  • Sterile and single-use status.
  • The pack code: ENDS-B1, ENDS-B5 or ENDS-B10.
  • Which systems on the unit the bag will be used with.

Frequently asked questions

Do EVD-010 and EVD-020 use different bags?

No. Both systems use the same specification, an 800 ml drainage bag with an air filter, and the separately supplied bag is one item with three pack sizes.

Can a used bag be emptied and reconnected?

The bag is supplied as a single-use product. Handling, emptying and replacement follow the instructions for use and the hospital’s protocol.

Does a new set need a separate bag ordered with it?

No. Each EVD-010 and EVD-020 system includes an 800 ml air-filtered bag. Separate codes are for bags needed in addition to the one in the set.
