For shunts and external drainage

Antibiotic-impregnated catheters

DESU EVD sets, shunt kits and catheter kits are also offered with antibiotic-impregnated catheters, which are recognisable by their orange colour.

What is an antibiotic-impregnated catheter?

An antibiotic-impregnated catheter carries the antibiotic in the catheter material itself. In DESU catheters the antibiotic is impregnated into the silicone and released in a controlled manner over 28 days. The catheters have the same dimensions, tantalum marks and drainage holes as the standard versions.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the antibiotic released?

The antibiotic is impregnated into the material and released in a controlled manner over 28 days.

Do impregnated catheters differ in size from standard ones?

No. The antibiotic-impregnated versions have the same inner and outer diameters, lengths, tantalum length marks and drainage holes as the standard catheters.

How can impregnated catheters be told apart?

By colour: antibiotic-impregnated catheters are orange, standard catheters are white.

Which DESU products come with antibiotic-impregnated catheters?

The EVD-010 and EVD-020 external drainage systems; the ventricular, peritoneal, ventriculoperitoneal, lumbar, lumboperitoneal and lumbar drainage catheter kits; and the Defit, Decurve and Depus shunt kits.

What is the difference between semi- and full-antibiotic shunt kits?

In a semi-antibiotic kit the valve is standard and the catheters are antibiotic-impregnated. In a full-antibiotic kit both the valve body and the catheters are impregnated. Defit, Decurve and adjustable Depus valves are also offered with only the valve body impregnated.
